Why a sprint?
The UK ranks highly for research excellence but continues to face barriers in translating this into business-led innovation. Fewer firms are investing in R&D, and many SMEs cite external barriers to innovation.
The University of Liverpool’s Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC) set out to tackle this by launching a new programme – bringing together some of the region’s most ambitious, high-growth businesses across advanced engineering, biotechnology, manufacturing and digital sectors.
The breakthrough
The initiative isn’t just another leadership programme – it’s a new form of innovation programme for business leaders looking to future-proof and transform their organisations. To make a real breakthrough in bridging the gap between research and successful business innovation, the VEC realised it was time to change the story.
The impact
With a brand marque inspired by classic bookmark design, and a colour palette inspired by growth and renewal, Novel is turning the page on innovation. The VEC is empowering high-potential SMEs with world-class training, and creating a unique peer network of private and public sector leaders, who can make change happen.
The initiative has already caught the attention of the Government, with discussions underway to scale Novel as a national blueprint.
